Receive, process and return to nature animals seized in an unlawful manner: this is the role of the Screening Center Wild Animal / Cetas Vitória da Conquista, service connected with the Municipal Environment. Created in 2000, still in the first administration of Mayor William Menezes, the center has been an important instrument of attention to nature.
The center conquistense is one of the busiest in the country, according to the large influx of wild animals occurred in Bahia, mainly because of traffic. Often, the site receives animals from other states such as Goias and Minas Gerais. Over 90% of the population is made up of local birds, the rest is distributed between reptiles and mammals. The vast majority comes from seizures carried out by IBAMA, the Municipal Environment, Fire Department, Federal Highway Police and other environmental agencies.
In ten years of operation have been more than 26 000 animals. All animals that arrive there are accommodated, they got great care. Do not miss food, they have the support of IBAMA that provides a car to Cetas for the transport of animals at the time of release and redemption, and in addition, the City bears all costs.
For the service is done efficiently, the Cetas has six general service staff, a professional responsibility to prepare special food for each animal and make the distribution in certain times, in addition to a technical team composed of a veterinarian and a biologist.
Located in the Municipal Park of Serra do Periperi, the Center has an internal area of approximately 260m ². After rehabilitation of the animals, releases are made, respecting the natural habitat of the species in areas registered by Cetas / IBAMA in protected reserves and conservation units in federal, state or municipal. "The release is constant because we have an obligation to return these animals to nature and thus have room for us to receive other animals," explains Aderbal. In 2010, already held the release of more than 300 birds.
